Lake Chuzenji, eight miles from Nikko and 2,460 feet higher, is one of the loveliest spots in the Japanese highlands, and should not be omitted. The broad highway connecting it with Nikko is unmistakable and practicable for jinrikis, horses and chairs.

A walk thither on a bright morning is thoroughly charming; the mountain scenery is inspiring, and one usually meets many courteous and happy folks trudging between the two places. Pedestrians can save about four miles on the outward journey by taking the tram-car from Nikko to its terminus.

The Kegon Waterfall (Kegon-no-taki) now serves as an overflow for Lake Chuzenji, but it is gradually cutting its way down through the doleritic lava strata and may some day drain it entirely.

The view of the Daiya-gawa as it pours through the narrow cleft, spreads against the green, and plunges with thunder into the wide vortex below is superb. Clouds of spray rise from the bottom and fill the noisy canyon with spectral light. A still better view can be gained by scrambling down to a point almost level with the pool, where the down-rushing water is awe-inspiring.

Lake Chuzenji, or Chuzenji-ko, called also Setsu-ro-ko, "clear snow-water lake," is 4,460 feet above the Pacific Ocean. The surroundings are among the most beautiful and perfect in Japan. Forest-clad hills encircle the lake and rise to an imposing height.

The most beautiful time is midsummer, when the tranquil pool drowses like a lapis-lazuli mirror in a faultless green frame and reflects every soft outline of the billowy clouds that ride lazily above it. At that time the days run softly; the hours are long and sweet and satisfying.

The June rains continued far into the autumn, and the entire region suffered under an almost interminable downpour. Land-slips occurred on several of the most precipitous peaks, but the most serious was that of sacred Nantai-zan, overlooking Chuzenji Lake.

Suddenly, at about 8:30 a.m., a wide area of sodden ash and volcanic tufa, thickly covered with forest trees and underbrush, detached itself near the mountain summit and began to slide down its steep side. An instant later it gained the momentum of millions of tons of matter and plunged down the slope with unthinkable swiftness and force.

As this huge mass plunged to the 500-foot bottom of the lake, a corresponding body of water leapt upward and hurled itself in blind panic over the Kegon precipice. Fifty lives were lost; three bridges and two hundred houses were wrecked in the vicinity of Nikko.
